A Tale of Two Souls

They stood on two different shores
An entire vast sea separating them
Neither knew in a few years they would be inseparable
Neither knew the other existed

They stood on two different shores
Looking for meaning
Looking for a life partner
Neither knew in a few years they would find each other

They stood on two different shores
Frustrated with the world
Disgusted with humanity
Neither knew where life was taking them

One fine day she crossed the sea
One fine day he met her
They took their time, they didn’t trust the universe anymore
Neither knew the universe had bigger plans for them

They began to meet
Each step forward, slow and cautious
It was a dance of two people burnt too often by staying too close to the flame
It was the caution of several years come together all at once

With each passing day, they grew closer
Every minute spent together began to feel precious
Until finally he knew she was the woman for him
Until finally he knew she was worth the wait

She knew exactly when he made up his mind
Yet her distrust of the universe held her back
So many what ifs plagued her mind
She needed time

Time to permit herself to let go of her fears
Time to allow herself to feel his love
Time to laugh in the face of the universe
Time to make her peace with the past

He was patient, she was kind
He brought out the gentle, beautiful side of her
He pulled her out of the abyss into the light
And she… pulled him out right back

They gazed into each others’ eyes
By the shores of a lake
Both on the same side now
Both ready to begin a life together

All those years of not being together
All those years of yearning
All the emotions gathered under that starry sky
Until love conquered all
